Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus

It was well over a decade ago when I first watched Nabeel Qureshi’s video testimony. I thought to myself, “Wow. There’s an intelligent and articulate guy!” He was clearly well educated, but I was more impressed by his patience (when fielding difficult and often aggressive questions) and his lucid and logical articulation (persuasive without sounding dogmatic or heartless).

Sadly, Qureshi passed away due to aggressive stomach cancer in 2017 at the age of 34. As an aside, while many people mourn the loss of Charlie Kirk in 2025—and rightfully so—not too many folks know about Qureshi’s untimely passing. Fortunately, there are lots of videos of his presentations and debates on the Internet, and you owe it to yourself to check them out.
Although those videos are excellent sources of information, I strongly recommend reading Qureshi’s autobiography, Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus. This autobiography is more than just a story of one’s conversion. It’s a deep dive into what it means to seek the truth when the cost of doing so can mean possibly losing everything and everyone you cherish. You see, Qureshi was a devoted Ahmadi Muslim, and this book tells his story of desperately wanting Islam to be the true religion. But, in the end, the truth he pursued and discovered led him to walk away from Islam and turn to Christianity. His subsequent struggle with respecting and honoring his culture, community, and family was gut-wrenching. That’s because Qureshi had a pious Muslim upbringing. He was raised in a loving, disciplined, and deeply religious home, which defies the popular Western prejudice and perception. This background is important because it shows that his later departure from Islam was not due to rebellion or discontent but an agonizing and earnest search for the "truth."
At Old Dominion University, Qureshi develops a friendship with David Wood, a Christian who engaged Qureshi without prejudgment, fear, or disrespect. The encounter was pivotal to both men. Their conversations, debates, and unmitigated search for the truth were based on honesty, respect, and friendship. It’s hard to imagine a Muslim and a Christian engaged in years of dialogue for historical evidence, comparison of the Quran and the Bible, and investigation of the life, claims, and works of Muhammad and Jesus. But they did. Their discussions are presented in short chapters that are easy to digest for anyone interested in apologetics.
What struck me the most was their friendship, which was at the core of their sustained search for the truth. That is, they weren’t just wrestling with facts, information, and “I know more than you” or “My religion is better than yours” kind of confrontations. No, they were genuinely interested in the truth and working out their differing views and understandings through long conversations and deep contemplations. We can all learn here that a relationship is critical to having tough conversations about faith and truth.
The last section details the "relational cost" of conversion. Qureshi vividly captures the internal "clash of cultures" he experienced. In his community, faith is not just a private belief but the very fabric of family and identity. To leave Islam was to humiliate his parents—a realization that leads to some of the most heart-wrenching passages in the memoir. Qureshi does not shy away from this pain, making his eventual decision to follow Jesus seem not a lighthearted choice but a sacrificial response to what he concluded was an undeniable reality.
In sum, Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus is an example of the strength of friendship and the bravery needed to follow one's conscience. It challenges Muslims—as well as agnostics and adherents to other religions—to think about the historical claims of the Gospel. Parenthetically, Qureshi inspires Christians to love and better understand their Muslim neighbors.
This book is a thoughtful, polite, and incredibly clear work. It is hard to put down the book without a deeper understanding of the significance of faith and the shared human search for God. What stands out the most from Qureshi’s faith journey is his commitment to go wherever truth leads him. With brutal honesty, we too can seek the truth and arrive at the same conclusion as Qureshi did.
